If a partner, advisee or media outlet needed to reach me suddenly, they could find me no matter where I happened to be at the time. I just made my request to migrate from t-Mobile to Google voice, Hopefully in a few days all should be up and running.
How (and Why) to Port Your Old Phone Number to Google Voice
What I’m wondering is if I forward all my calls to my GV number will that forward my text messages as well and will ATT charge me for the text messages which are forwarded. I keep hoping magic will happen and GV will port my home phone. I have been forwarding my home phone to my GV number for like a year. This way, someone calls the “house” and it rings mine and my wife’s phone. When you’re done, you can port the unlocked number to another provider.

AT&T doesn't display your account number anywhere on the website or from the phone, you have to call customer service to get your account number. And before you ask, no, it's not the same as your phone number, it's a separate and distinct account number. But a quick call to AT&T resolved this issue and I was on my way. In our case, we're familiar with AT&T and they had a good deal for a $9.99 no commitment GoPhone that would be perfect for our needs.
If porting your number isn’t working
I'm looking forward to being able to get rid of our land line when we move, but I'm struggling with my Google Voice number as I have been getting a ton of spam calls there now too. The thing of it is, I don't even know what my GV # is without looking it up, so I have no idea how people are getting it. I've never signed up for anything using it. There are a few things to note about this whole process. While it was all pretty straight forward to accomplish, it did take a few hours of effort in figuring out some of the various oddities.
You’ll find most of these details in your phone number account. At that point, though, your forwarding number is all set up and you’re good to go. Enter in a name for your forwarding number and type in the phone number below that. You can also select whether or not you want text messages to forward as well. If you want to configure even more settings, click on “Show advanced settings”. Next, click on “I want to use my mobile number”.
OK, it's ported to Google Voice -- now what?
And at this point, the $15 per year will be our only recurring charges for phone. Anyway, like I said, you’re on your own from this point on. I am not going to port my Google Voice number, mostly for the reasons stated above. I don’t feel like paying a one-time fee of $20 just so I don’t have to get new business cards. Besides, you don’t even need to get new business cards to benefit from Google Voice. That’s because AT&T (and I’m guessing most other cell phone providers) allow rule-based call forwarding for free.
Verizon requires a Number Transfer PIN for authorization. You’ll first need to request a Number Transfer PIN from Verizon. When porting the number to Google Voice, use the PIN and Verizon account number for authorization.
Your rep will check your area to ensure Community Phone has coverage before you sign up with them. If you merely want to move your number, but don't need all of Google Voice's features or fiddly bits, just contact the carrier you want to move to. They'll help you make the move with a minimum of fuss. As more and more of us use smartphones and ditch our landlines, we're not quite as aware of the newness of being reached anywhere. I'd think I'd be working at the old house, but then I'd get an emergency call from a contractor working at the new house.

Some operators require this information to verify you own the number. Account numbers are hard to find, and it’s easy to forget your PIN number. If successful, 'Number unlocked' will be displayed at the bottom left.
